What I’m Working on… Going Big

Typically when I paint I work in manageable sizes (9x12) or smaller. This is because I often like to start by painting plein air outside and then finish up in the studio. It’s very difficult to paint large paintings plein air so I find that it does not come to me naturally.

I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone with my latest painting. This painting, entitled “Low Sun on the Hollyhocks” is 24x30 inches. Feeling some success with a larger size has made me want to continue some work in this bigger format.

What I’m Working on… Nap Paintings

As mom of three it’s hard to find time to paint. Lately I’m regulated to the brief one to two hours of nap time. This challenge has provided me with a unique inspiration - creating with speed, while also creating something beautiful.

The Junior League of Buffalo Decorator’s Show House 2023

When my friend (The fabulous designer Emily Mainier of Oakham Mount Living) talked to me about her latest project with the Junior League of Buffalo’s designer show house I was immediately interested.

The show house is St. Patrick’s Friary in Buffalo and it was built it 1891. Emily’s design features a nod to the building’s historic past by incorporating elements that would have been part of that time period. My personal favorite is the connection to the artwork that was becoming recognized during that period - the impressionists!

Our idea was to create an artwork for the house that would transport the viewer back in time. I painted the Buffalo lighthouse and harbor as it would have looked back when the friary was built, and I painted it in the style of the impressionists.

As a plein air painter I couldn’t go back in time and paint the scene directly, so I had to do a lot of research to determine how I wanted this painting to look. I also decided because iI had to paint it in the studio that I would start with a traditional underpainting known as an imprimatura.

In addition, I created two floral paintings that tied to the floral arrangements created by Sarah at Highland Springs floral design.
